Profile Cindy, who has applied for the Philippe Karl Teacher Course should one run in RSA has been riding full time professionally since 2003 and started teaching at 16 while still at school, giving lessons three times a week. From 2002 she gave lessons daily and now at the age of 24 in 2010, owns and runs a riding school on her family property looking after over 40 horses including liveries. They have 2 full size arenas with a third under construction and teach over forty regular students. They invested in a Combi to collect children and bring them to the school. Being a long way out and this ensures that they arrive safely and gives them a safe and supportive place to be until their parents can collect them. Among the many activities of running a riding school Cindy can also drive and fix tractors and can often be found making her own hay! Harmony Philosophy Cindy believes that children should have a relationship with the horse or pony they work with. They must saddle and brush it and not just hop on and ride. Cindy says: "At Harmonie we expect them to come for the horse and spend quality time with it, not just in the saddle time. They must learn to understand it and know if it is not 100%. They are taught how to take responsibility for another creature with thoughts and feelings. I increasingly build in the principals of equine learning theory, correct use of the horse's physical make up and work at changing the way people think, away from the more conventional ideas, to better horsemanship techniques. By working in this way I see both children and adults become more confident and settled, I see more trust and confidence in them and they develop a better way of carrying themselves."Experience
Cindy teaches an average of three lessons per day - 2 group sessions and 1 x private session and this is usually with a maximum or 12 students. She also hosts complimentary horse care courses such as Equine Podiatrists and Nutritional lectures, and these may be with overseas trainers. She has more recently started teaching and assisting with Silversand Horsemanship work, helping problem horses, young horses and people (beginners) who do not understand equine learning theory and this different way of working with their horses. Cindy now uses this kind of horsemanship more and more her work - including re-starting horses and starting horses. Horsemanship Development Cindy has also started Freelance teaching in the area, going out to teach or train on other people's properties. She prepares children for the SANEF school league which involves showing, dressage, show jumping and equitation. Cindy takes children once a month to the Inter-schools competition and over the last two years has had riders that gained provincial colours. In 2009, she had 18 riders participate, 10 of whom got Provincial colours and three of those were selected for the Nationals. Cindy herself held Provincial colours twice since leaving school. She often takes children to local shows and graded shows and regularly hosts her own, including fund raisers. They try to incorporate all styles of riding and often run Western Games. Skills
