Timing, Feel and Leadership

LESSONS FROM THE DANCE HALL - Timing, Feel and Leadership

This revelation into horsemanship training was taught to me on the dance room floor.

Learning to dance can really help you understand the aspects of good leadership, feel, partnership and generally how to work with your equine dance partner.  It is really quite incredible, because although one may have rhythm or be familiar with musical timing and so on, getting the two together is quite something else - especially when you add another person into the equation like your dance partner.  What I discovered is that this is even more difficult when you are used to being the leader which I work hard at being for my horses.  Due to this, I actually make a really bad dance partner! I tend to get resistant to the feel - especially if the person trying to give the feel is lacking in confidence. It makes me want to lean into the pressure and take over rather than being led.  It's fascinating actually because it's really useful information for me.  It teaches me that I need to let go more and go with the flow and rhythm.  Learning to dance is helping me to learn to try to follow a feel myself - but this is of course so much easier when the person who you are dancing with is confident and just knows exactly where to push or add pressure at exactly the right moment.

Leadership

TRUST, LEADERSHIP AND AWARENESS

I always come back from teaching trips having learnt something, either about myself, the horses or both.  On one such trip that I made to Kilgobbin Stud where I often work it was no exception.  I have to say a big thank you to Carl Bronner of Kilgobbin Stud for allowing me to work with her beautiful horses and for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow by exposing me to so many different horses, each with their own unique character.

Leadership revisited

LEADERSHIP REVISITED

After a recent visit to the W Cape by Equine Scientist Andrew McLean, an interesting discussion came up on the subject of leadership after his evening lecture.  As you know, it is something that I talk about and teach quite a bit.  The lecture covered lots of good stuff, much of which we have discussed in the Comfort Zone such as overshadowing, learned helplessness, approach and retreat and other subjects relevant to equine learning theory.
